The vertical lines on the upper lip and the lines running down from the corners of the mouth sit in the one zone EMface's pads do not cover. The applicators sit on the forehead, the cheeks, the eyes and the area under the chin. What EMface does for the mouth is indirect and real: the cheek applicators tone the muscles that lift the corners of the mouth, so a downturned mouth lifts as the cheek is held higher. What each device does around the mouth
EMface lifts: the zygomaticus and risorius, contracted by HIFES under the cheek pads, hold the corners of the mouth up, and the fold from the nose to the mouth softens as the cheek rises. Exion Face smooths: radiofrequency with targeted ultrasound warms the skin around the mouth with nothing through the skin, and BTL says it boosts the skin's own hyaluronic acid. The lips themselves are not treated with either device. Lips that have lost volume are a filler question, and the clinician says at the free consultation which of the three fits.
The evidence
EMface's clearances name the forehead, the cheeks, the eye area and the area under the chin, and no EMface study measures the mouth, and we say so. BTL's full-face study measured lift at the brows and the cheeks rather than at the mouth, and the full-face page sets out those figures.
The session and the plan
An EMface session is 20 minutes with nothing through the skin and no downtime. Exion Face needs no needles and no numbing; in our experience the skin is pink and warm afterwards and you go back to your day. The clinician sets the order, usually EMface's four weekly sessions with Exion Face between or after them, and the after photograph is at three months.
